Here's a 40-year history of major east-wind occurrences along the Wasatch Front:

1959 - Oct. 30: 100 mph winds in Davis County cause $1 million damage along the Wasatch Front. Many unfinished homes in Kaysville's Crestwood subdivision are damaged.1961 - March 18: Canyon winds hit 84 mph, demolishing a church in Ogden and also downing power lines and damaging roofs in Davis County.

1963: - Feb. 11-12: Strong canyon winds buffet Davis County, causing a power line to overload and arc, setting fire to a barn at the Smoot Farm in Centerville. The winds caused the fire to spread quickly to other farm buildings, killing some 200 Jersey cows.

1964 - April 3: 60 mph canyon winds close U.S. 91 in Davis County.

Nov. 15-16: Canyon winds gust up to 80 mph to topple a church spire in Logan, close schools in Weber County and shut down roads between Salt Lake City and Ogden.

1969 - May 6-7: East winds hit 70 mph and blow over large trucks near Farmington.

1970 - May 23: 100 mph canyon winds blast Salt Lake, Davis and Weber counties. 125 homes are damaged and 35 people injured.

1971 - Feb. 20: Wind gusts over 88 mph in Davis County damage a dozen homes in Kaysville and topple eight railroad cars in Farmington.

Oct. 29: Canyon winds from Bountiful to Farmington create 8-foot snowdrifts and tip many semitrailer trucks over.

1973 - April 2: East winds reach more than 80 mph, closing I-15 for several hours. Lagoon reports wind damage, and six semitrailer trucks are blown over.

Nov. 12: Wind gusts hit 75 and cause power outages between Tooele and Ogden.

Dec. 11: Winds reach 75 mph along the Wasatch Front, dropping chill factors to subzero levels and creating power outages.

1977 - March 27: Canyon winds of almost 100 mph center in Davis County.

1978 - Nov. 11: Canyon winds at Bountiful reach a record 110 mph and rake the Wasatch Front from Ogden to Salt Lake City.

1980 - Jan. 18-19: Centerville suffers 90 mph east-wind gusts. Some power lines are down. Damage exceeds $500,000.

1983 - April 4-5: Winds in east Layton reach 104 mph and 101 mph at South Ogden. A dozen train cars derail near Farmington, and 55 high-voltage power transmission towers between Farmington and Layton are bent. Property damage is $10 million.

May 31: Late on Memorial Day, 75 mph canyon winds strike Farmington and strong east winds blow between Salt Lake City and Ogden.

1985: - Dec. 10: Snowdrifts from 70 mph east winds close the Davis County Courthouse. Winds at Utah State University reach 68 mph.

1986 - Feb. 7: Farmington has 87 mph winds, and 400 Kaysville homes lose electricity.

Oct. 12: Centerville is lashed by 84 mph winds, while wind speeds are only 7 mph at the Salt Lake International Airport.

1988 - March 16: Canyon winds reach 80 mph. 1,450 Farmington homes lose electric power.

Sept. 12: Canyon winds strike from Salt Lake City to the Idaho border, with Centerville having 77 mph winds. Power is knocked out in several areas.

Dec. 15: East winds strike the Wasatch Front. Centerville has 104 mph wind gusts, and a south Layton home is blown off its foundation.

1990 - April 18: Hurricane force east winds strike Davis and Weber counties. A large tree is uprooted in the Farmington city cemetery, and a trampoline in North Ogden is blown through a home's windows.

1991 - Nov. 15: 71 mph canyon winds tip semitrailer trucks over and cause havoc in Davis County.

1993 - Feb. 16: Canyon winds, preceded by light snow, close I-15 from Bountiful to Farmington.

1997 - Jan. 12: The Bountiful bench is raked by 77 mph wind gusts.

Feb. 24: Davis County experiences wind gusts up to 73 mph. Damage estimates reach $8 million.

April 2: 74 mph winds pour out of Davis County canyons, closing I-15 to high-profile vehicles. The roofs of some homes are torn, and damage estimates reach $4.3 million.
