The Church's Book of Mormon Pavilion was one of the attractions as Expo '74 opened in Spokane, Wash., on May 4, 1974. More than 1,700 people went through the pavilion on the first day of the international fair, according to the May 11, 1974, Church News.The Church's entry, which had the appearance of gold plates, was dedicated on May 1 by Elder Mark E. Petersen of the Quorum of the Twelve with a congregation of more than 2,500 in attendance. Elder Petersen called the project "a great missionary enterprise."
Of the first-day visitors, 381 members of other faiths filled out referral cards. A Book of Mormon with a special cover was published for the event and 148 were purchased on opening day.
