Rockies 13, Cubs 6This was the opposite of goose eggs.

By the time Colorado was done with the Chicago Cubs' pitchers, the Rockies became only the third team this century to score every inning.

"When we get beat, we don't mess around, do we?" the Cubs' Mark Grace said Wednesday after Colorado's 13-6 victory at Wrigley Field.

Colorado became the ninth major league team to achieve the feat, the first since St. Louis won 15-2 on Sept. 13, 1964 -- also at Wrigley Field. It happened only one other time this century, when the New York Giants beat Philadelphia 22-8 on June 1, 1923.

The feat has been accomplished just nine times in major league history -- and not at all in the American league.

"The way things are going for us, we could score a run every inning and lose by five," said Larry Walker, went 3-for-5 with a single in the first, a double that loaded the bases in the third and a leadoff triple in the fifth.

"A high school team could come here and score 10 runs the way the ball was going out today," Walker said, referring to a 16 mph wind that helped Sammy Sosa hit his sixth homer.

At Wrigley, rookie Chris Sexton hit his first major league home run and had three RBIs, and Dante Bichette went 4-for-5.

"Some of the players, when their careers are over and they're talking with somebody, they can say, 'We scored every inning in a game,' " Rockies manager Jim Leyland said. "I'm just glad we won."

Pedro Astacio (2-3) struck out 11 in eight innings. Terry Mulholland (2-1) gave up seven runs -- six earned -- and 11 hits in five-plus innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, REDS 1: Randy Johnson (3-1) pitched a four-hitter for his second complete game of the season and hit a run-scoring double for the third RBI of his career. He struck out eight and walked none, allowing an RBI single to Pokey Reese in the fifth following Brian Johnson's two-out double.

Jay Bell drove in three runs with a solo homer and a bases-loaded single as Arizona stopped a three-game losing streak and finished the longest road trip in team history at 6-7.

Steve Avery (1-3) allowed all five runs and seven hits in five innings.

BRAVES 12, CARDINALS 3: John Smoltz (5-0) won his ninth consecutive decision since Aug. 31, allowing three runs -- two earned -- and five hits in seven innings at Turner Field. Smoltz, 17-1 since last season's All-Star break, also had two of Atlanta's 16 hits.

Brett Boone homered and hit a two-run double, and Ryan Klesko and Brian Jordan each hit two-run homers for the Braves, who have won 10 of 12.

Kent Bottenfield (4-1) was pounded for five runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

BREWERS 2, MARLINS 0: Scott Karl (3-1) allowed seven hits in eight innings, and David Nilsson's seventh-inning homer broke a scoreless tie as visiting Milwaukee beat Florida for the 12th consecutive time. Bob Wickman struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save.

The Marlins, who have baseball's worst record, lost their eighth straight. Brian Meadows (3-3) was the loser.

DODGERS 8, EXPOS 2: Jamie Arnold (1-0), pitching in place of injured Carlos Perez, allowed only one hit in 6 2/3 scoreless innings -- a sixth-inning single by Orlando Cabrera -- in his first major league start.

Alan Mills and Jeff Shaw pitched the ninth for the visiting Dodgers to complete the three-hitter.

Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer off Javier Vazquez (1-2) in the third and a solo shot off Guillermo Mota in the ninth.

ASTROS 5, METS 4: Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Armando Benitez (0-1) to overcome a 4-3 deficit and give visiting Houston its eighth win in 10 games.

Jay Powell (2-0) won, and Billy Wagner struck out all four batters he faced for his 10th save in 10 chances. He has fanned 24 in 11 1/3 innings.

PHILLIES 11, PADRES 1: Paul Byrd (3-2) shut down visiting San Diego on two hits in eight innings and matched his career high with seven strikeouts. The Padres have lost seven of eight.
