VICTORIOUS VARGAS EYES DE LA HOYA: Fernando Vargas beat up Raul Marquez, and now he wants to take on one of Marquez's buddies.
Vargas retained his IBF junior middleweight title by stopping a bloodied Marquez midway through the 11th round Saturday. It was Vargas' 17th straight victory, but he had to go past the seventh round for the first time in his career.
The victory kept alive Vargas' goal of unifying the junior middleweight division and then perhaps taking on undefeated welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya. Vargas has long wanted to get a shot at De La Hoya.
"It goes back to the days when I was a kid. I idolized him. But when I got a chance to meet him, I was given the cold shoulder. Throughout the years, that has caused me pain," Vargas said. "You always say to yourself, 'I'm going to beat that guy if I get him in the ring.' I was thinking I had to get to that level. And you know what? I'm at that level now."
