ALPINE -- Former residents are heading home for Alpine Days.
The weeklong celebration began in 1910 as a homecoming for past residents returning to their city, said Councilwoman Pheobe Blackham. Alpine Days is still a homecoming, as many residents hold their family reunions around the city festivities, she said.TUESDAY
Tonight, a singles tennis tournament begins at 5:30 p.m. at Lone Peak High School. Thursday at 5:30 p.m. a mixed doubles tournament will be held. No preregistration is necessary. The cost is $3 for singles and $6 for doubles. Call Connie Bunker at 756-9265 for more information.
WEDNESDAY
Wednesday, residents are invited to "sync or swim" at the beach-theme lip sync, 7 p.m. at the Alpine Stake Center, 98 E. Canyon Crest.
THURSDAY
Spot and Fluffy will strut their stuff in the children's pet show at 9 a.m. Thursday just east of City Hall. The theme is "Pet Togetherness: Enjoying Responsibility." Winners will be featured in Saturday's parade. Winner's categories include worst breath, biggest feet and most lovable. The registration fee is $1.50 per pet. Reptiles and birds are also welcome.
Magic shows will also be held at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. at the city park. Admission is $2.
A children's bike race, for ages 13 and under, will be held 6:30 p.m. at Burgess Park. Registration is $3.50 at the city park gazebo every day between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
FRIDAY
Alpine babies and grandbabies are invited to the baby contest at the city park between 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Friday winners will be featured in the parade.
Between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. there will be children's water games at the Alpine Stake Center. Children will rotate through game stations such as a water slide, a dunk tank and a fire hose. The cost is 50 cents per child. Each child receives a popsicle.
The rodeo starts at 6 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. There will be sheep riding for ages 6 and under, steer riding for ages 7 to 14, barrel racing for girls and pig chasing for youths of all ages. Children must be signed up for steers and barrels. Registration is $2 and can be paid at the city park gazebo until Thursday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Youths 12 and over are invited to a dance from 8:30 p.m. until midnight at the Alpine Stake Center. A $2 donation is requested per person.
SATURDAY
Early birds can join the flag ceremony at 6:45 a.m. Saturday at City Hall. Afterward the firefighters' breakfast will be served at the fire station. The cost is $13.50 per family or $3 for adults and $2.50 for children. The breakfast ends at 9:30 a.m.
The history hike begins at 7 a.m. at the cul-de-sac at the end of Moyle Drive. The hike will go until 8:30 a.m. Also at 7 a.m. is the mountain bike race and the 5K run/walk. Both begin at City Hall Registration continues until Thursday at the city park gazebo between 4 and 6 p.m.
The parade starts Saturday at 10 a.m. at Alpine Elementary School. It ends at the Mountainville Chapel. After the parade there will be entertainment in the city park and an art and quilt show in the Mountainville chapel. A family dinner will be held in the park between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4.25 for children under 11. Tickets can be purchased until Thursday at the city park gazebo between 4 and 6 p.m. and all day Saturday.
At 9:30 p.m. there will be a fireworks show at the LDS stake center, 98 E. Canyon Road.
