WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) -- Navajo Nation President Kelsey Begaye has vetoed legislation that would have decriminalized adultery and bigamy.
The Tribal Council approved a resolution during the recent summer session that would have abolished adultery and bigamy from the tribe's criminal code.Begaye says the resolution would have weakened family values and sent a message that being unfaithful or taking more than one wife is acceptable. Laws against adultery and bigamy have been on the Navajo books for more than 20 years.
Begaye also vetoed the council's measure because of its support for reservation gambling.

While the measure upheld a general ban on gambling, it carved an exception for a tribally sponsored gaming operation.
