All Republicans, all the time.
That's the way it has been in Davis County in recent years. And that's the way it will stay on Nov. 7, according to Rob Bishop, chairman of the Utah Republican Party.
Republicans currently hold all eight Davis County seats in the Utah House of Representatives and all three of the county's spots in the state Senate.
The GOP incumbents are running for re-election in five of those House races to be decided on Election Day, and Bishop is confident his candidates will claim the three open seats as well.
Only one of the county's three Senate seats is up for re-election, and again Republicans expect victory.
But even though Democrats haven't won a House seat here in a long time and it is one of the most Republican counties in the state, Davis has sent moderate Republicans to the House in recent years. Reps. Sheryl Allen (District 19) and Richard Siddoway (District 20) are leaders in the moderate House GOP caucus.
That trend continued in the primary elections this year with several House incumbents fighting off challenges from their party's right wing.
The best shot for a Democratic breakthrough next month could be in District 15, where Democrat Gibbs Smith — a well-known publishing name in Utah — had a close race two years ago with Rep. Blake Chard.
"This district contains a lot of Hill Field workers," said Todd Taylor, executive director of the Utah Democratic Party. "We need a good turnout; there are growing numbers of Hispanics there and we could win it."
Chard ran for the county commission this year, lost the GOP primary and then was named the state's new director of Youth Corrections.
Doug Aagard is the Republican nominee for the district, and Bishop predicts another GOP win. If that happens, Aagard would have the honor of being the first alphabetical listing among lawmakers.
Here is a brief look at each of the Davis County races:
Senate District 23 (Bountiful, Woods Cross): This district has elected Republicans for years, most recently former Senate President Lane Beattie, who stepped down in June to become state Olympic officer.
The Republican, Gov. Mike Leavitt's appointee to serve the final six months of Beattie's term, is former car dealer Dan Eastman, who has good name identification in the area. The Democrat is Kathryn Rowley, a cancer-control worker for the Utah State Department of Health.
"No way in hell we lose this one," Bishop said. "We'll win with 70 percent of the vote."
"We have a shot," Taylor countered.
Rowley will push her opposition to tobacco use and Republicans' lack of dedication to fighting tobacco, Taylor said.
House District 13 (Clinton, Sunset, Syracuse, West Point): Paul Ray will try to defend this seat for retiring GOP lawmaker Nora Stephens, a champion of drunken-driving laws. Ray is challenged by Democrat AnnaJane Arroyo of Sunset and Libertarian Donald Kingsley of Syracuse.
House District 14 (Clearfield): "Todd Weber is a real go-getter," Taylor said of the Democratic candidate. "He came to us several years ago and asked that we help get the Utah Constitution amended so he could run for the Legislature when he was 21. We said wait a bit."
Now Weber is 25, meets the legal requirement and will take on longtime lawmaker Don Bush.
"Don has no problem. He wins," Bishop predicted.
House District 15 (Kaysville, Layton): Joining Smith and Aagard in the competition is Libertarian Susan Green Parker of Layton.
House District 16 (Kaysville, Layton, South Weber): House Majority Leader Kevin Garn faces only a minority party candidate, Libertarian Laren Livingston of Kaysville.
House District 17 (Farmington, Fruit Heights, Kaysville): Rep. Marda Dillree seeks her fifth term against Democrat George Miles of Kaysville and Farmington Libertarian Joe Judd.
House District 18 (Centerville, West Bountiful, Woods Cross): Republican Roger Barrus will attempt to hold this seat for his party by replacing Susan Koehn, who retired from the House after two terms. The Democrat is Bill Goldberg of West Bountiful. Daniel Nelson of Centerville is a Libertarian candidate.
House District 19 (Bountiful): Allen, who has served since being appointed in 1994, is opposed by Democrat Louis Naegle and Libertarian Richard Hopkins.
House District 20 (Bountiful, North Salt Lake): Siddoway, of Bountiful, seeks his third term. He is challenged by Democrat Jay Vance of North Salt Lake.
