Chad Everett, who once played a doctor on television, praised real-life surgeons for performing lifesaving heart procedures on two Kosovo children for free.

"These are the real heroes," said Everett, national spokesman for Gift of Life, which helped arrange the surgeries at the University of California at Los Angeles' Mattel Children's Hospital.

The children were flown to Los Angeles along with their mothers and an interpreter by Samaritan's Purse, an international relief organization.

Gift of Life donated $5,000 per child for various tests. The surgeries were funded by a UCLA hospital grant. They would have cost up to $250,000 per patient.
