Staci Burt can proudly claim to be the only Utahn drafted in the inaugural Women's United Soccer Association draft held on Sunday and Monday.

Burt, a former Cottonwood High and University of Utah standout, was selected by the Carolina Tempest in the eighth round, 59th pick overall.

She'll be teammates with Michelle Akers, Carla Overbeck, Danielle Fotopolous and Tiffany Roberts, all national team players who were allocated to Carolina three months ago.

Ironically, Burt's new teammate will also be former BYU All-American Maren Hendershot, a native of Colorado. Hendershot was selected one round before Burt with the 53rd pick. Both are expected to compete for a starting spot.

The eight-team WUSA begins its first season in April.

Erin Fahey, a University of Utah assistant coach, was selected in the eighth round by the Washington Freedom. Fahey's playing time might be limited considering she'll be backing up Siri Mullinix, the starting goalie for the national team.
