RILEY STAYING PUT: Chargers coach Mike Riley will be back next season despite San Diego's NFL-worst 1-13 record, team president Dean Spanos said Saturday.

Spanos ended weeks of speculation when he told the players in a team meeting in Charlotte, N.C. — where the Chargers play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday — that Riley will be back in 2001.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP: Laura Pilakowski had 23 kills, including the match winner, as Nebraska rallied to beat Wisconsin 3-2 on Saturday in the final of the NCAA women's volleyball tournament — 15-9, 9-15, 7-15, 15-2, 15-9.

Boxing

FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: South African Mbulelo Botile knocked out Paul Ingle of England in the 12th round Saturday to win the IBF world featherweight title.

Winter sports

WORLD CUP DOWNHILL: Alessandro Fattori won his first World Cup race Saturday in Val D'Isere, France, leading an Italian sweep of the top three places in a downhill.

Fattori covered the sun-drenched Oreiller Killy course in 1 minute, 52.25 seconds, followed by by Kristian Ghedina in 1:52.57 and Roland Fischnaller in 1:52.66.

NORDIC WORLD CUP: Per Eloffson of Sweden won his third straight event in the Nordic World Cup, taking Saturday's cross-country combined event by 31.1 seconds over defending World Cup champion Johan Muehlegg at Brusson, Italy.

BIATHLON WORLD CUP: Magdalena Forsberg of Sweden missed a target from the shooting range but produced the fastest cross-country skiing performance to win the women's 7.5-kilometer sprint event of the biathlon World Cup.

Tennis

WORLD DOUBLES: Home-crowd favorites Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi defeated top seeds Rick Leach and Ellis Ferreira 6-3, 7-5 Saturday to advance to the final of the ATP Tour World Doubles Championship for the third time in four years.

In Sunday's best-of-5 championship, Paes and Bhupathi face Donald Johnson and Piet Norval, who defeated Simon Aspelin and Johan Landsberg 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the first semifinal at the Kerala State Lawn Tennis Association.

Golf

TEAM MATCHES: Dottie Pepper and Juli Inkster, seeking their fourth straight LPGA title, beat Grace Park and Kelli Kuehne 4 and 3 on Saturday in the Hyundai Team Matches.

Pepper and Inkster will face Sweden's Annika Sorenstam and Canada's Lorie Kane in the final Sunday. Sorenstam and Kane beat Meg Mallon and Beth Daniel 2-up in the best-ball event.
