MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brother Booker T. Ashe, a cousin of tennis star Arthur Ashe and a Capuchin monk who ran Milwaukee's House of Peace for the needy for more than a quarter century, died Sunday. He was 68.

Ashe founded the organization in 1967 as an outreach center apart from the large church structures. It was a place to distribute emergency food and clothing to the poor.

He later added a library, classes and recreational programs, and he also helped with job placements.

In 1970, the Capuchin order elected him to a term as a provincial councilor, making him the first black in the United States to be selected to that administrative post.
