"Steve"
Harold J. "Steve" Stevenson died March 17, 2000 in Bountiful, UT.He was born Nov. 27, 1906 in Salt Lake City, the only child of Abraham and Christine Frandsen Stevenson. He married Ardella Thackeray Rawle in Butte, Montana, Oct. 5, 1937. She died December 3, 1988. He married Helen Thackeray, Ardella's sister, September 22, 1989 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Steve was a self-made man, a good one and well-educated by his own diligent study, a wide variety of work experiences, and recreational and social activities. His formal schooling ended at graduation from grade eight at Roosevelt Junior High in Salt Lake City. He was an "oil man" in his youth, meaning he began his career at a gas pump in a service station. He climbed the ladder in the oil industry.
Prior to World War II he learned to fly and became a flight instructor in the Civil Air Patrol program to train pilots for military service. At war's end he bought land for an airport and flying school which he named Bountiful Sky Haven Airport (now known as SkyPark). He built the place piece-by-piece, managed it, and taught hundreds of the young and young-at-heart to fly over a thirty-five year period. He flew charter missions all over the west including contracts to deliver mail for the U.S. Postal Service.
He was generous to his extended family and friends. He was cheerful and radiated his happiness and optimism, always expecting the best possible outcome of a situation and always expecting the best of himself and his associates.
Steve was a charter member of the Oakridge Country Club in Farmington. He owned property in Holladay which he named "Sleepy Hollow;" it still bears that name. He was an avid gardener, golfer, animal lover, bird watcher, and boater. A trip around the world was a highlight of his travels. He was a High Priest in the LDS Church.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; five Thackeray nieces and nephews; and five Stevenson cousins and their families. All were especially dear to him. Also survived by numerous relatives and friends.
