Six men and one woman from Utah's ranks of attorneys and judges have been nominated to fill a vacancy in the Utah Court of Appeals left by the appointment of Justice Michael J. Wilkins to the Utah Supreme Court earlier this year.

The nominees are:

William B. Bohling, a 3rd District Court judge in Salt Lake City since 1993 and a finalist for one of the two Supreme Court positions filled by Wilkins.

Carolyn Baldwin McHugh, a shareholder with the law firm of Parr, Waddoups, Brown, Gee & Loveless in Salt Lake City who has twice been nominated to district judge positions.

Merrill F. Nelson, an attorney from Grantsville employed with the law firm of Kirton & McConkie.

Stephen L. Roth, an assistant U.S. attorney for nine years in Salt Lake City.

Anthony W. Schofield, a 4th District Court judge since 1993 who resides in American Fork.

William A. Thorne, a 3rd District Court judge in Salt Lake City since 1994 who was also a Supreme Court finalist.

John Frederic Voros Jr., an assistant attorney general with the Utah Attorney General's Office in Salt Lake City.

The public is invited to submit written comments on the nominees to David J. Jordan, chairman of the Appellate Judicial Nominating Commission, at P.O. Box 140241, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-0241, by March 31.

Following the period of public comment, the commission may amend the list and submit the final nominees to Gov. Mike Leavitt, who will in turn submit his choice to the state Senate for confirmation.
