PHOENIX (AP) -- The Phoenix Suns waived veteran center Mark West on Saturday and placed guard Jason Kidd on the injured list.

Kidd broke his left ankle Wednesday night against Sacramento and will miss the rest of the regular season. His availability for the playoffs is questionable. The Suns coaxed 11-year veteran guard Kevin Johnson out of retirement Thursday, signing him to a $165,000 contract for the remainder of the season.

Johnson, 34, hasn't played in the NBA since 1998 and said he hopes he'll join Phoenix on its Eastern road trip that begins Tuesday night in Miami.

It was originally thought Johnson might play his first comeback game Sunday night here against Golden State.

"I need a lot of practice," he said. "I don't want to go out there and not be an asset. They've got good chemistry now."

West, who first played for Phoenix from 1987-94, was re-signed as a free agent on Oct. 19 and averaged 1.4 rebounds in 22 games.

He missed nine games with back spasms from Jan. 22 to Feb. 8 and has been on the injured list with back problems since March 16.
