Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister died peacefully in her sleep on May 22, 2000 after a long struggle with Alzheimers.
She was born January 16, 1919 in Bergen, Norway to Anna Marie Waeroe Fluge and Emil Jeremiassen Fluge. She married John Langeland, the love of her life, in Bergen, Norway on April 9, 1943. Marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She and her husband emigrated with their two oldest sons to Salt Lake City in 1948.
Edna was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served faithfully in whatever she was called to do. From 1975-1978 she served with her husband as he presided over the Norway Mission. In 1985 she was called to serve as the first Matron of the Stockholm, Sweden Temple.
Her greatest love was her husband and six children, 33 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She taught by precept as well as example the Christ like qualities of obedience, sacrifice, service and love. She loved life regardless of the challenges she faced. She loved the Gospel, America and her "medicine."
Mom was always involved in something: she knit beautiful Norwegian sweaters for her grandchildren; she embroidered exquisite needlepoint wall hangings; she loved to entertain and garden. She created rich Norwegian Christmas traditions which will be cherished for generations to come. We'll miss her whistling while she worked. One of her favorite sayings that she reminded all her missionaries was, "If you're happy, notify your face." She was a gospel scholar and an avid reader of Church books.
Edna is survived by her husband of 57 years; sons, Fritjof F. (Shirley) and S. Emil (Diane); daughters, Anne Marie (Mark) Pace, Janet (John) Rees, and June L. (Kevin) Pearson; 33 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Hildur Fluge (Armand) Johansen. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Per Fluge Langeland, a brother and a sister.
