Former Sen. George McGovern believes an international program that provides meals at school is a good way to fight world hunger.

Of the 800 million hungry people worldwide, 300 million are school-age children, and 130 million of them are not in school, McGovern said Friday at a meeting of the Sioux Falls City Club.

Part of a United Nations goal to reduce hunger includes a pilot school lunch program in 30 third-world countries. The result: improved attendance and better grades, the former three-term South Dakota senator said. "You can't educate a child who is hungry," he said.
