WASHINGTON (AP) — Robert L. Schweitzer, 72, a retired Army lieutenant general and heavily decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War, died of cancer last Saturday at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

As a major and lieutenant colonel, he led troops in combat in the 1960s during six tours in Vietnam. His many decorations included the Distinguished Service Cross, the Army's highest award for valor after the Medal of Honor.

During a 36-year Army career, Schweitzer also held high posts at the Pentagon, NATO and the National Security Council.
