TORONTO — Alexander Mogilny didn't realize he scored his 400th career goal until it was almost too late.
Mogilny had two goals and added an assist to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 6-1 victory over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on Monday night.
Mogilny, signed as a free agent in the offseason, gave Toronto a 4-0 lead at 1:14 of the second period with his fourth goal of the season.
"I didn't know it was my 400th at first," Mogilny said. "When I was on the bench the play was going on, they dropped the puck, and I was like 400! I'd better keep the puck! It would be nice to keep, so I was hoping some other guy wouldn't score and get the puck."
Mogilny eventually got the puck and said he would put it in his closet.
The 32 year-old winger also snapped a wrist shot past Shields 53 seconds into the first.
"It was an excellent goal," Mogilny said. "I surprised myself."
Robert Reichel and Mikael Renberg scored their first goals for the Maple Leafs. Reichel had a goal and two assists, and Renberg finished with a goal and an assist.
"We don't have two lines that can score, we have four," said Renberg, who was impressed by Mogilny.
"If I had his shot I would shoot all the time. He's got a great wrist shot and I hope he uses it a lot this year."
Jonas Hoglund and Alyn McCauley also scored for the Maple Leafs.
Anaheim goaltender Steve Shields allowed five goals on 19 shots before being replaced by Ilja Bryzgalov at 7:58 of the second.
"We stunk," Shields said. "If guy's on this team don't come to play, than we are going to be brutal, and we'll get crushed like we did tonight."
Renberg passed in front to Hoglund, whose one-timer beat Shields at 12:51 of the first, and Mogilny assisted on Renberg's goal at 19.57.
Toronto scored three goals in the second.
Reichel passed from behind the net to Mogilny, who scored the Leafs' fourth goal.
Alyn McCauley extended Toronto's lead to 6-0 lead at 12:40.
Mike LeClerc scored for Anaheim at 4:51 of the third.
Toronto goaltender Curtis Joseph, who finished with 20 saves, made a diving glove save midway through the second period on a shot by Paul Kariya.
"The game was embarrassing," Kariya said. "Our confidence is fragile right now. We have a lot to learn about how to play the game. It's not acceptable to play like that."
BRUINS 4, CAPITALS 0: Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists, and Byron Dafoe stopped 22 shots for his 100th win in Boston as the Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 4-0 Monday.
Martin Lapointe had a goal and an assist and Brian Rolston had two assists for Boston, which scored twice on the power play. Sergei Samsonov scored his 97th career goal, and Mike Knuble also scored for Boston, which improved to 3-0.
Olaf Kolzig stopped 28 of 32 shots for the Capitals.
BLUE JACKETS 2, FLYERS 2: Jan Hlavac scored in the third period on a shot that ricocheted off the skates of two Columbus defenders as Philadelphia rallied to tie Columbus.
The Flyers trailed by two goals in the final period before tying the game. Philadelphia rallied from a two-goal deficit to salvage a 3-3 tie against Columbus on Saturday night.
Hlavac's unassisted goal with 6:47 left came on a shot from the slot that bounced off the skate of defenseman Deron Quint and then off the skate of Jamie Pushor.
Simon Gagne also scored for the Flyers, and goaltender Brian Boucher finished with 28 saves.
Quint and Serge Aubin scored for Columbus, which extended its unbeaten streak at Nationwide Arena to seven games (4-0-3-0).
Blue Jackets goaltender Marc Denis finished with 30 saves.
