Recently, the Dutch parliament authorized euthanasia (mercy killing) by a vote of 46-28, the first country in the world to do so. I am grateful for the Deseret News' editorial of April 15, ("Holland's new law dangerous"). I agree with it completely.
As one who was born in the Netherlands, I have a feeling of shame and deep concern for my fellow countrymen. Shame that they have now legalized killing of terminally ill patients; and concern for the moral consequences of their actions.
The Dutch are famous for legalizing immoral behavior such as prostitution, drug use, homosexual marriage, etc., reasoning that everyone can do their own thing without consequences to society as a whole. But the Netherlands has seen dramatic increases in crime and social problems recently because of their liberal ideas. Amsterdam, for example, is now one of the most dangerous cities in Europe.
God, in his infinite wisdom, said long ago, "Thou shalt not kill, or do anything like unto it." Placing doctors, who have taken an oath to protect and preserve life, in charge of ending it is dangerous and a conflict of interest.
In a socialistic country, where they provide all the health care for everyone, where health care is already rationed, the new law is opening a door to potential danger and abuse. Only God can give life and take it away. Everyone has a right to life and a right to die with dignity, but this does not include suicide and death sanctioned and carried out by government.
