Utah's Elaine Elliott and Stanford's Mike Montgomery received the 2001 John and Nellie Wooden Award from the Utah Tip Off Club and coaching legend John Wooden.

Elliott has amassed a 374-152 record (.711) during her career at Utah and is the winningest coach in Utah women's basketball history. This season, Elliott and her Utes made a first-ever visit to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Montgomery has guided his last Cardinal men's teams to a combined 172-41 (.808) record and seven straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament with one trip to the NCAA Final Four.

At Saturday's noon banquet before a crowd of 400, Utah Tip Off Club Chairman Lee Brower said the award "is the only one given in Wooden's name to the coaching fraternity.

"Because the John and Nellie Wooden Award bears the name of one of the most respected and honorable men who ever coached the game," Brower added, "it is given to those who not only have successful records and winning seasons, but whose lives are shaped by character."

The event also included the presentation of the annual Frank Layden Player of the Year Awards to Utah's top boys and girls high school basketball stars. Also, Utah's Amy Ewert and BYU's Mekeli Wesley were named the top Division I Players of the Year by the Utah Tip Off Club.

"It is an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as Mike Montgomery and John Wooden," Elliott said. "They represent all that is good in the game."
