OREM — Caldera Systems Inc., a maker of software and training systems for users of the Linux operating system, said Monday it has completed acquisitions that will make Caldera the largest Linux company in the world.

Caldera completed the acquisition of the Santa Cruz Operation Inc. server software and professional services divisions, UnixWare and OpenServer technologies.

Caldera now has sales, support and marketing representations in 82 countries. It also has more than 15,000 resellers worldwide.

The company said it will focus on three main business lines to meet the needs of small to medium-sized businesses, replicated sites, data centers and the departmental needs of the enterprise: development, deployment and management products.

The deal was announced last August.

SCO has changed its corporate name to Tarantella Inc. Under terms of the transaction, SCO received cash of $23 million and a note from Caldera for $8 million due in four quarterly installments beginning in the second year after the transaction closes. SCO also received 16 million shares of Caldera.

Caldera said the move will give it exclusive distribution rights for SCO's OpenServer product line. The California company produces Unix software. Linux is a Unix variant, and Caldera is among a number of companies that sell Linux packages on CD-ROM.
