Neifi Perez provided an immediate spark for one team. Mike DiFelice made a final contribution for another.
Perez, part of a three-team trade Wednesday that moved him from Colorado to Kansas City, doubled and scored as the last-place Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1.
"The trade is part of baseball," Perez said. "That's fine. I'm still playing baseball."
DiFelice laid down a sacrifice bunt in the second inning of Tampa Bay's 3-1 win over the Anaheim Angels. Moments later, the catcher was traded with pitcher Albie Lopez to the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitcher Nick Bierbrodt, outfielder Jason Conti and cash.
Tampa Bay left fielder Greg Vaughn was surprised when he later saw John Flaherty putting on catcher's equipment.
"I said to him, 'Flash, what are you doing?' He said, 'Piggy just got traded,"' Vaughn said.
Vaughn wished DiFelice well.
"It's a great situation for him, going from last to first. And Albie's from Phoenix. So it'll work out good for both of them," he said.
Perez went 1-for-5, but it was a big hit. His double off Aaron Sele (12-2) keyed a four-run burst in the fourth at Safeco Field.
Perez started at second base, while Rey Sanchez stayed at shortstop. But Royals general manager Allard Baird said Perez will become the starting shortstop after Tuesday's trading deadline.
"If Rey is still here, he will play second base and some shortstop. He would still be utilized," Baird said.
TWINS 3, ATHLETICS 1: Jermaine Dye, sent from Kansas City to Oakland in the deal that included Perez, went 0-for-3 for the host Athletics.
Dye, however, made a strong throw from right field to cut down a runner.
Joe Mays pitched two-hit ball for 7 2-3 innings as Minnesota stopped a five-game losing streak.
YANKEES 4, TIGERS 2: Derek Jeter homered and hit an RBI double as New York defeated Detroit at Yankee Stadium.
Paul O'Neill also homered and Scott Brosius ended an 0-for-14 slump with a two-out, tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning.
The Yankees won their fourth in row.
BLUE JAYS 4, RED SOX 3 (10): Alex Gonzalez homered into the left-field screen at Fenway Park, lifting Toronto over Boston.
Manny Ramirez and Dante Bichette hit back-to-back home runs to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Red Sox did not get another hit until Troy O'Leary singled with one out in the 10th.
The Blue Jays stopped their three-game losing streak.
INDIANS 7, WHITE SOX 5: Jim Thome hit his AL-leading 32nd homer as Cleveland beat Chicago at Jacobs Field.
Thome had struck out in his previous seven at-bats before hitting an RBI single in the first inning and a home run in the third. It was his 11th home run in July.
RANGERS 6-5, ORIOLES 5-2: Justin Duchscherer won his major league debut, pitching into the seventh inning to lead Texas over Baltimore in the opener of a doubleheader.
Jeff Zimmerman earned saves in both games as the host Rangers completed a sweep. Texas has won three in a row for the first time since April 13-15.
Baltimore has lost 17 of its last 20 games, including five straight to Texas.
