BOSTON — Dagny Mellgren scored two goals to lead the Boston Breakers to a 2-1 victory over the Washington Freedom in the WUSA on Sunday.
Kristine Lilly had two assists for Boston (6-9-3), which moved into fifth place.
Mellgren opened the scoring in the 25th minute, taking a lob pass from Lilly and breaking free from the Freedom defense. Mellgren beat Washington goalkeeper Siri Mullinix from 18 yards.
Mellgren, alone in the box, accepted a pass from Lilly and scored in the 44th minute.
Bai Jie scored off a crossing pass from Krista Davey in the 70th minute for Washington (6-10-2).
The Freedom had one of their best scoring chances in the 49th minute. With Breakers goalie Tracy Ducar out of position, Mia Hamm's shot was headed away by defender Kate Sobrero.
CYBERRAYS 2, COURAGE 1: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim Clark got her first WUSA goal and assist in a span of eight minutes in the second half as the Bay Area CyberRays beat the Carolina Courage 2-1 Sunday.
Bay Area (9-5-4) is unbeaten in 11 of 12 and pulled into a tie for the WUSA lead with Atlanta.
Carolina (6-10-2) had won three straight and four of five. The Courage have 20 points and are four behind Philadelphia for the WUSA's final playoff spot with three games left.
Clark scored just four minutes after coming off the bench, sneaking behind the Carolina defense on a long feed from Sissi in the 58th minute.
Carolina's Carla Overbeck tied it in the 62nd minute on a feed from Erin Baxter after the Courage cleared a corner kick on the other end. It was her second goal this season.
Bay Area answered four minutes later when Clark fed Katia on a 3-on-2 break. Katia beat Courage goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill with a low shot to the left side of the net for her fourth of the season.
