LONDON — Prince Charles visited an east London mosque Friday, saying he wanted to call attention to Islam's commitment to peace and nonviolence.
Britain's Muslim community has been the target of hostility since the Sept. 11 terror attacks on New York and the Pentagon.
"I very much wanted to come here ... to show how much I minded about and cared about the Islamic community in this country, particularly at a time when it's so difficult for everybody," he told reporters at the UK Turkish Islamic Cultural Center and Suleymaniye Mosque in east London.
"The prince's openness to other faiths is excellent," said Kemal Kaymakci, a board member at the mosque. "We need more open-minded people like him."
Charles also met with traders at the London office of Cantor Fitzgerald, the bond firm that lost more than 650 employees in the collapse of the World Trade Center.
