Harold Ellis Merkley, age 90, died April 15, 2002.
He was born Jan. 21, 1912 in Vernal, Utah to Ellis and Jean Gerber Merkley. He married Evelyn Prusse Merkley on Nov. 2, 1934 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
His early education and high school was in Vernal, Utah. He graduated from BYU with a B.A. degree in 1935, and then from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1939 with an M.D. degree. He served an internship at Denver General Hospital in Denver, Colorado and received surgical training for one year at Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah. He practiced as a Mine doctor and General doctor for the entire Eagle County, Colorado from 1941 to 1946. His residency in OB-GYN was at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. His private practice of medicine (OB-GYN) was in Grand Junction, Colorado for two years and three months. He practiced OB-GYN in Salt Lake City, Utah for 37 years. He retired on March 1, 1987. He was a former member of the Utah State Medical Society, Salt Lake County Medical Society, Utah State OB-GYN Society, Fellow of American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and American Medical Association.
He is survived by his daughter Janice M. (Frank) Crenshaw; two grandchildren: Brandon and Brian; and a sister, Geraldine Clark. He was preceded in death by a son, brothers and a sister.
Preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, on May 28, 1998, also a son, brothers and sister.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 12:30 p.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
