PROVO — The BYU basketball team has added two players while losing three this week.
BYU men's coach Steve Cleveland announced Friday that he has received national letters of intent from Kevin Woodberry, a point guard from Dixie State College, and Luiz Lemes, a combo guard from Eastern Oklahoma State College.
The two highly regarded transfers join Rafael Araujo, a 6-foot-11 center from Western Arizona, in committing to BYU from the junior college ranks. Araujo committed to the Cougars during the early signing period in November.
Meantime, center Jon Carlisle, forward Jesse Pinegar and guard Shawn Opunui have each decided to leave the BYU hoops program. Opunui and Pinegar, whose careers have been hampered by injuries, will transfer elsewhere. Carlisle, who transferred to BYU from the University of Utah, has decided to give up playing collegiately but will continue to attend the Y.
Cleveland also announced that freshman guard Jimmy Balderson will vacate another roster spot to serve a two-year LDS mission. Balderson will return to play for BYU after his mission.
Cleveland said BYU could still sign additional players before the completion of the signing period on May 15.
