Jazz rookie small forward Andrei Kirilenko landed a spot Monday on the NBA's 2001-2002 All-Rookie Team, making him the first Utah selection on the first-team honor squad since Karl Malone in 1986.
Kirilenko, 1999 first-round draft choice from Russia who did not come to the NBA until this season, is joined on the team by Memphis teammates Pau Gasol and Shane Battier, Golden State's Jason Richardson, San Antonio point guard Tony Parker.
Gasol was the lone unanimous selection, receiving the maximum 56 points. Battier garnered 54 points, followed by Richardson (53), Parker (48) and Kirilenko (45).
Kirelenko edged Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley, who received 43 points and heads a second-team that also includes New Jersey's Richard Jefferson (35), Houston's Eddie Griffin (21), Detroit's Zeljko Rebraca (15), and Seattle's Vladimir Radmanovic and Phoenix's Joe Johnson (11 each).
The voting panel consisted of the NBA's 29 head coaches, who selected five players for the first team (awarded two points each) and five for the second, regardless of position. Coaches could not vote for players from their own team.
Kirilenko was named on 18 first-team ballots. Among the others receiving votes were Jazz starting center Jarron Collins, who scored four points.
Kirilenko joins Malone, Darrell Griffith (1981) and Thurl Bailey (1984) as the only first-team selections in Jazz history.
