The city of Provo wants to own and operate the fiber-optics telecommunications network known as iProvo. If plans are realized, the ultrahigh-capacity network's bandwidth would be leased to private firms, which in turn will provide the services at a retail cost to homes and businesses in the city.
Subscribers would be able to pay for enhanced voice, video and data services. Network planners say some bandwidth would be reserved for education and community-building purposes.
The iProvo network is designed to be a part of a public-private partnership where the essential infrastructure is owned by the public but the services are provided by private sector companies.
Questions about iProvo — and a proposal to borrow money to pay for the system's launch — can be asked at three public meetings this week.
