Under the leadership of President Dallin H. Oaks, a new era of temple announcements is here for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
President Oaks, the 18th prophet-president of the Church of Jesus Christ, announced during October 2025 general conference that “with the large number of temples now in the very earliest phases of planning and construction, it is appropriate that we slow down the announcement of new temples.”
President Russell M. Nelson, who died at age 101 on Sept. 27, 2025, had announced plans to build 200 new temples since becoming church president in 2018.
“He loved to announce new temples at the conclusion of each general conference, and we all rejoiced with him,” President Oaks said, adding: “We will now move forward in providing the ordinances of the temple to members of the church throughout the world, including when and where to announce the construction of new temples.”
During a January interview at the dedication of the Burley Idaho Temple, President Oaks said: “The best place to announce a temple is in that temple district.”
The First Presidency has announced three new temples under the leadership of President Oaks, all during gatherings of members in those areas.
