The Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, will divorce his second wife, former flight attendant Mariam Haji Abdul Aziz.
Hassanal, the supreme ruler of the tiny, oil-rich sultanate on Borneo since 1967, remains married to Anak Hajjah Saleha, his first wife. There are three types of divorce under Brunei's law, which, like many Muslim countries, allows men to take up to four wives.
In an announcement late Sunday on state-owned television, Hassanal's brother, Prince Sufri Bolkiah, said the sultan had declared first stage divorce with AzizMariam, under Brunei's Islamic, or sharia, law.
