Development of enclosed malls is in a lull nationwide. Only nine are expected to open in 2005, down from a record 19 in 1990.

A major reason is that so-called lifestyle centers are a growing trend. Lifestyle centers feature an "open air" design, with shops and restaurants opening to the outdoors, whereas malls traditionally enclose shops, restaurants and entertainment under one roof.

Utah has several malls, from Logan to St. George, but also has seen a major lifestyle center, The Gateway, pop up in Salt Lake City. Ogden tore down the Ogden City Mall a few years ago, hoping that a lifestyle center will replace it.

Nationally there are more than 100 lifestyle centers — a figure expected to double during the next few years.
