Little League: The Highland High alum and once Deseret Morning News "Mr. Football" recalls his mother reading "A Wrinkle in Time" to her children. "She always made sure that we had something to read other than watching television."
Playbooks: Scalley enjoys religious books. He also likes mysteries, particularly "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. But "Seabiscuit: An American Legend" by Laura Hillenbrand is his favorite. "It's all about motivation and living life the right way. Good things happen to good people — and good horses, for that matter."
Today's pick: Scalley is reading "One More Strain of Praise" by the late Neal A. Maxwell of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Quorum of the Twelve.
Literary pursuits: "Reading will get you a lot further than watching television. There's a lot of junk on television nowadays that really dilutes . . . and pollutes the mind. Reading prepares you for school and prepares you for college. Intellectually, it gives you an advantage."
