DALLAS (AP) — Want salad sent over with that pizza?
Pizza Hut said Wednesday that it will begin offering prepackaged, family-size salads for delivery and carryout nationwide. The pizza chain already offers salads in its restaurants.
The company said it will be the first to offer Fresh Express Ranch Salad Kits, which serve a family of four. The kits are available for $2.99, beginning Saturday.
Companies such as McDonald's have recently introduced healthier foods as the industry faces lawsuits from consumers who blame their obesity on fast food and snacks.
Dallas-based Pizza Hut, a unit of Yum! Brands Inc., also began offering a lower-fat pizza last year.
"These bagged salad kits give moms an easy, prepared, fresh solution that complements our pizzas, and we bring it to her," said Tom James, Pizza Hut's chief marketing officer.
Fresh Express, a subsidiary of Performance Food Group and based in Salinas, Calif., is one of the world's largest producers and distributors of fresh salads.
