BYU
FOOTBALL: Junior receiver Nathan Meikle has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team. He was one of only three players from the Mountain West Conference to earn Academic All-America honors. A native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Meikle is a business major with a 3.85 GPA. He caught 24 passes for 199 yards, rushed seven times for 39 yards and one touchdown, and returned 20 punts for 143 yards.
FOOTBALL: In an effort to help support the immediate needs of the Utah Food Bank, members of the BYU football team have organized a food drive for Friday and Saturday. Nonperishable items will be accepted from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, and from noon until 8 p.m. on Saturday at one of two Provo-area Hogi Yogi locations, the Corner at 44 E. 1230 North in Provo or 4833 N. Edgewood Drive in the Riverwoods. Players from this year's team will be on hand at both locations to accept donations and sign autographs.
Weber State
BASKETBALL: The Coach's Corner with veteran media host Bill Marcroft and Weber State men's basketball coach Joe Cravens airs now on Channel 3. Channel 3 is carried by Comcast Cable along the Wasatch Front and features high school sports and Park City programming. The WSU Coach's Corner features interviews with players, coaches and game footage.
FOOTBALL: Offensive tackle Paul McQuistan has been selected to the 2005 AFCA Division I-AA Coaches' All-America Team. The team is voted on by the AFCA's Division I-AA All-America Selection Committee, which is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA's nine districts.
Utah State
WOMEN'S SOCCER: USU earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the third straight season, posting a grade-point average of 3.42. The award is given to intercollegiate soccer programs that earn a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
VOLLEYBALL:Zuzana Cernianska received honorable mention all-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), it was announced Wednesday. Cernianska joins former Aggie Erin Cartwright-Davis (2001-03) as the only AVCA all-Americans in Utah State history.
Westminster
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Westminster College moved up one spot to No. 13 in the latest NAIA Div. I poll. The Griffins, 7-2 overall, will play two games in Orlando, Fla., against Virginia Intermont College on Dec. 20 and Freed-Hardeman University on Dec. 21.
Southern Utah
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Southern Utah women's basketball team (5-3/0-0 Mid-Con) returns to the Centrum Arena for its annual pre-Christmas homestand, which begins Friday as the Thunderbirds play host to Eastern Oregon (7-3). SUU will then close the stand and its non-conference home slate Tuesday against in-state foe UVSC at 6:05 p.m.
