Robert Edwin Elbel 1925 ~ 2005 Robert Edwin Elbel passed away on December 1, 2005 in Salt Lake City, UT, at the age of 80. He was born on July 8, 1925 in Hannibal, MO, to Edwin and Nora Elbel. He married Lyda Louise Harris in 1960; they were married for 45 years. Survivors include his wife (Lyda), daughter (Ruth), sons (Russ, Karl), grandchildren (Zachary, Lucas, Alex, Anthony), and sister (Joann). He obtained a BA and MA in Entomology from the University of Kansas, and a PhD in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma. He served in the Navy, and then worked for the U.S. Civil Service in a variety of Entomology related positions for 25 years, both in the U.S. and abroad. He spent another 30 years as an Entomology Research Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Utah. He loved the outdoors, especially camping, backpacking, and hiking. He taught his children to love and appreciate the outdoors as well. He also enjoyed insect photography and daily exercise. He was a great provider for his family, and a great role model. We learned a great deal from you, and will miss you and think of you always. Services will be held at the Christ United Methodist Church in Salt Lake City, at 2375 E. 3300 S., on Sunday, December 11 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Robert Elbel Scholarship. Donations may be made out to the University of Utah, c/o the Robert Elbel Scholarship, and mailed to the University of Utah at 540 Arapeen Dr. STE 250, Salt Lake City, UT 84108. The scholarship will be awarded annually to Biology students - one day, some may even become Entomologists.
