PROMONTORY, Box Elder County — A woman remained in critical but stable condition Thursday after an explosion and fire injured her and killed a fellow technician at the ATK Thiokol plant Monday night.

Steve Watters, a Brigham City resident described as in his middle 40s, was killed in the accident. The woman was taken first to a local hospital, then to the University of Utah Intermountain Burn Unit.

Melodie de Guibert, Thiokol spokeswoman, said the woman's family asked that her name not be released.

Thiokol has formed an investigative team with about 15 members, made up of ATK Thiokol employees, people from other ATK units around the country, and Air Force, Navy and NASA personnel, she said. They will call in experts as needed.

The team's findings probably won't be available for weeks, she said.

De Guibert believed investigators only entered the damaged building on Thursday. It was cordoned off in the way a crime scene might be, she said, because "they want to keep everything exactly the way it is and not disturbed."

Watters and the woman were working in Building M-590, a research and development laboratory about seven miles north of the Thiokol headquarters complex. No rocket propellant was involved in the incident, according to the company.

The two were cleaning filters in the building, an early report indicated. Cause of the accident was not known.
