For Max Foreman Dalby, music lessons were a must for his children.

As head of the music department at Utah State University, Mr. Dalby would trade lessons with fellow professors. They taught his kids — and he taught theirs.

"Dad gave thousands of private music lessons and helped many college students on their way to a profession and a more enriched life," said daughter Becky Nelson. "His dedication to the art of music education is evidenced by his influence on many music teachers and communities."

On Sunday, Mr. Dalby, 84, died of complications from colon cancer.

Born in Driggs, Idaho, Mr. Dalby is best known for his contribution to the music department at USU. He served as coordinator of music education, head of the music department and director of several Cache County orchestras and bands.

In the early years of the Utah Symphony, Mr. Dalby was a principal clarinetist. He worked from 1950 until 1957 at several Utah high schools, directing instrumental music.

He received a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University, master's from San Diego State University and doctorate from USU.

Nelson remembers her father as an artist and poet. He would paint miniature watercolors of the Cache Valley. His poetry was featured in the Logan newspaper.

"People remember what they learned from Max Dalby and want to bring the excitement of music to many people just as he has done," said Nelson, one of nine children. "His legacy is now."

Funeral services will be Thursday at noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple. Burial will be at the Logan Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions be made to the Max F. Dalby Endowment Fund, USU Music Department, 4015 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT 84322.
