Solving a problem for one client helped Kevin R. Duncan build a business that now solves document search and discovery problems for nearly half of the country's top law firms, as well as high-profile companies like ConocoPhillips, Toyota and Ford Motor Co.

Trained as an attorney, Duncan understood the challenges of recovering all documents relevant to a court case, particularly in an era when individual cases are more complex than ever and when many documents are available only electronically.

He was a consultant for Dow Chemical's legal department when the company asked him to take over a project processing millions of pages of documents. Duncan crafted processing procedures and hired a temporary staff of 40 to finish the job. That experience, and key people from that first hiring, formed the foundation of Bountiful-based CaseData Corp.

With the help of his senior staff, many of whom also are attorneys, Duncan developed dataDeliver, CaseData's proprietary Internet-based database software. DataDeliver allows CaseData clients to make secure document exchanges and comprehensive searches and reviews of the database compiled by CaseData, anywhere, at any time.

The software, and the "CaseData University" staff training program for employees, have met Duncan's goal to gather, organize, search and reproduce data in a way that gives attorneys total control over the facts of their cases.
