COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Utah senior defensive back Eric Weddle was named Tuesday as the Mountain West Conference defensive player of the year for the second straight season.
BYU quarterback John Beck won the award for offense, and New Mexico place kicker Kenny Byrd and Utah place kicker/punter Louie Sakoda shared the inaugural MWC Special Teams Player of the Year honor.
The players of the year and the All-Mountain West first- and second-teams were selected by the league's nine head coaches and the media.
TCU placed six players on the first-team, while BYU and New Mexico had five apiece.
UNLV wide receiver Ryan Wolfe was named freshman of the year, and BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall, whose team won the conference championship, was voted coach of the year.
