OREM — American Fork High School seniors honored teachers and parents at graduation June 1 with speeches of gratitude and warm applause.

"To be a parent is a full-time job," said senior class secretary Lauren Bangerter. "Parenthood doesn't take time off for sickness and holidays. They have loved us, consoled us, counseled us, led us, taught us, nurtured us, chastened us and supported us in all our high school activities. On behalf of the graduating class of 2006, thank you."

Valedictorian was Phillip McKinney and salutatorians were Stephen Richards and Christopher Fox. All three spoke.

Senior class President T.C. Taylor, activities Vice President Lynsey Leiter, Principal Carolyn Merrill and Alpine Board of Education member Keith Swain also spoke.

High school: Lehi

OREM — Living outside the box in order to create a life that's better than just typical — even if that means being called crazy now and then — was the theme of Lehi High School's graduation June 1.

"Who will be the next Martin Luther King? The next Columbus?" said Morgan Davis, who graduated in the top 10 of the class. "How can we as ordinary people make a difference? Don't just sit around and wait for things to happen. Make them happen. If we give up, we will always be ordinary."

Class President Jason Doel, top 10 students Lindsay Crandall and Alisha Anderson, Principal Charles F. Bearce and Donna F. Barnes of the Alpine Board of Education also spoke at the ceremony.

OREM — The 36 top students of Lone Peak High School were recognized at this year's commencement June 2.

Principal Kenneth "Chip" Koop spoke to those scholars and their classmates in red and black robes, telling them how proud he has been to watch their individuality develop and blossom.

"I've seen some of you on date dances not be able to get dates and then show up with your mom and dad," he said. "You refuse not to live life. You have great things ahead of you, and I look forward to watching you as you continue on in your lives. Take one step at a time and live life to the fullest."

Salutatorian Jennifer Brodie and valedictorian Karen Richards also spoke.

Seth Coons, Kyle Allen, Katrina Lewis, Matt Heiner, Katie Mower and Sam Cosper were awarded shields of honor, Jane Ann Patch and Brady Rice were Knights of the Year. Kellie Nyman and Adam Young were awarded the Spirit of Lone Peak.

High school: Mountain View

OREM — Mountain View High School seniors walked proudly across the stage in maroon and yellow robes to receive their diplomas June 2 at the McKay Events Center in Orem. The class was urged to not let the fear of losing keep them from playing the game.

"Failure is scary," said student speaker Robyn Brough. "Many people fear failure because they think it will make them unhappy. While failure may hurt for a while, the real tragedy is when we don't try at all."

Senior class officers are David Douma, president; Olivia Dayton, secretary; Breanne Tippetts, vice president; and Brett Aitken, historian.

Nabby Parkinson, Brett Aitken, Erica Eyestone, Olivia Dayton, Principal Richard D. Clark, Alpine Board of Education member JoDee Sundberg, Breanne Tippets and David Douma also spoke.

OREM — It was a hard goodbye for Principal Jane Lindhout as she said her farewells to the seniors of Orem High School, the 50th class to graduate from the school.

"I hope I'm here to see your reunion, because I know we will be met with incredible accomplishments that have made the world a better place," she said. "Know that you are leaving a gaping hole in Orem High and a pretty big hole in my heart. I'll miss you. Thank you for being my kids for the last three years."

Valedictorian was Ryan Gee and salutatorians were Dulce E. Boucher and Amber Harding.

The 492 graduates, who chose "Be the one" as their theme, were urged to stand up and take life by the horns.

"Will the world be different because you are in it? It doesn't have to be," said honor graduate Katy Bennett. "You can't stop the changes that come with life. You can, however, shape them. You are the one who decides what your world will become — how it looks, smells, tastes. It can become your bubble — your place to hide. You don't have to change the world. But wouldn't it be cool if you did?"

Honor graduates Lisa Acerson, Laura Bunting and Matthew Matheson, senior Maegan Johnson and Principal Jess Christen also addressed the class. Guy Fugal, member of the Alpine School District Board of Education also spoke.

OREM — The winds of life will inevitably blow. Whether or not you let them blow your ship off course is up to you.

That was the theme of Timpanogos High School commencement ceremonies June 2 at the McKay Events Center.

"To nautically conquer an opposing gale, a ship zigzags to its destination," student speaker Richard Black told his fellow graduates during the ceremony. "Little by little, zigzagging every step of the way, any goal can be reached. Whatever your dreams, whatever your wishes, take control to reach your destination. Once that diploma is in your hands, the ropes of that ship are yours to control."

Senior class president Tanner Shaw, Jessica Batty, Shaun Gordon, Kenneth Kensworthy, Carissa Hansen, Principal Brad Kendall, Board of Education member Debbie Taylor and senior class Vice President Brigham Breton also spoke.
