Nov. 1: The Gateway mall opens.

Dec. 26: The first Union Pacific trains roll through west-side neighborhoods along the 900 South line that was previously inactive.

Feb. 10: Hosted by Salt Lake City, the 2002 Winter Olympics begin.

Nov. 20: Nordstrom announces intentions to move to The Gateway mall despite opposition from Anderson and the City Council.

Dec. 16: LDS Temple Plaza compromise announced, giving up city easement in exchange for land on Salt Lake's westside for youth center.

Nov. 4: Anderson wins a second term after a hard-fought campaign against challenger Frank Pignanelli.

2004

July 9: Real Salt Lake is announced as newest Major League Soccer franchise.

Aug. 27: Nordstrom decides to stay at Crossroads Plaza mall.
