ROGERS CUP: At Montreal, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia advanced to the final of the Rogers Cup with a rain-interrupted 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dinara Safina of Russia on Sunday. Ivanovic will meet Martina Hingis of Switzerland in the final on Monday.

Golf

SAFEWAY CLASSIC: At Portland, Ore., Pat Hurst shot a final round, 4-under 68 and held off Jeong Jang to win the Safeway Classic at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club on Sunday. Hurst finished with a 10-under 206 on the par-72, 6,327 course near Portland International Airport. Jang finished with a 70 for a 9-under 207, along with Kim Saiki, who shot a 67 on Sunday. Juli Inkster had a 70 to finish at 208.

NATIONWIDE TOUR: At Moosic, Pa., Craig Bowden made par on the first playoff hole to beat Jess Daley and win the Nationwide Tour's Northeast Pennsylvania Classic on Sunday. Bowden, seven shots back at the start of the final round, shot an 8-under-par 63 — finishing with an eagle and birdie — for 16-under 268 total. After Bryce Molder and Brad Adamonis missed tying shots from about 20 feet out, Daley birdied the final hole to force the playoff.

Skiing

SKI PIONEER DIES: Alexander C. Cushing, the founder and chairman of Lake Tahoe ski resort, died at his summer home in Newport, R.I., the resort announced Sunday. He was 92.

Cushing, who helped launch the sport in the U.S. by bringing the 1960 Winter Olympic Games to his Squaw Valley USA near Lake Tahoe, died Saturday of pneumonia, the resort said. Cushing opened the California resort in 1949.

Swimming

PHELPS CRUISES: Michael Phelps ended his racing at the Pan Pacific Championships in style Sunday, winning the 200-meter individual medley in world-record time for his fifth gold medal.

Phelps powered past American teammate Ryan Lochte on the final lap, touching in 1 minute, 55.84 seconds. That bettered his old mark of 1:55.94, set in 2003.

Lochte finished in 1:56.11. Ken Takakuwa of Japan earned bronze.

Phelps won six medals, including five gold, and set world records in the 200 IM, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay. His only loss was to teammate Aaron Peirsol in the 200 backstroke.

Whitney Myers upset American teammate Katie Hoff in the 200 IM, denying Hoff a third individual gold.
