Dell history: Joined Dell as senior vice president of corporate strategy in April 1996 following time as a vice president and partner of management consulting firm Bain & Co. Became general manager of the Americas in May 1996. Named vice chairman in 1997. Title was changed from vice chairman to president and chief operating officer in 2001. Became Dell's chief executive officer in July 2004.
Education: Earned his master's of business administration degree and a master's degree in civil engineering and bachelor's degree in the humanities from Brigham Young University and remains an active supporter of the school. He is a member of BYU's President's Leadership Council and the Marriott School National Advisory Council, where he founded and continues to sponsor the Rollins Center for eBusiness.
Corporate boards: Serves as a director on the boards of Dell Inc. and Catalyst, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of women in the workplace.
Other activities: Serves at the request of the president of the United States on the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiation and is a member of the Technology CEO Council and the U.S. Business Council. Active in the American Enterprise Institute and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
