Elma Osguthorpe Penrod Jones

Elma Osguthorpe Penrod Jones of Provo died on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo just 11 days before her 94th birthday. She was born November 11, 1913 in East Mill Creek, Salt Lake County, Utah, the seventh child of Joseph Osguthorpe and Mary Luella Russell. She attended Granite High School. She was particularly adept at business skills, and won a scholarship to Brigham Young University in Provo. She attended BYU for two years. In 1932, she married Grant Forsyth Penrod, who was a teacher in Provo City School District. The marriage was later solemnized in the Provo Temple. Using her impressive shorthand, typing, and people skills, she was the executive secretary to the superintendents of Provo City Schools, working with both Dr. J C. Moffitt and with Dr. Sherman Wing.
Grant and Elma were the parents of two children, R. Gary (Sandra) Penrod of Simi Valley, California and Karelyn Penrod (LaVere) Adams of Pleasanton, California. She is also survived by a sister, Lydia Stillman of East Mill Creek. Grant died in 1970 and Elma later married John F. Jones in 1975. He passed away in 1996. In addition to her two children, she is survived by two step-children, Charles Jones of Alpine, and Kathy Johnson of Murray. She had 12 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 5, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Edgemont 9th Ward Chapel, 4300 North Canyon Road, Provo, Utah. Friends may call Sunday, November 4, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., Provo; as well as one hour prior to the services at the church.
