Seymour P. Steed
1921 ~ 2007
Seymour P. Steed, 86, died December 11, 2007, in his home after a brief bout with acute leukemia. He was born June 5, 1921 in Ogden, Utah to Gerald Miller Steed and Maria Elizabeth Catherina Potgieter. His family lived for a brief time in Farmington, Utah before moving to San Francisco, California. After graduation from Polytechnic High School, he worked as a pipe fitter in the naval ship yards of Alameda. During this time he married Jane Shirley Coggins. He later joined the Navy, serving on the USS Stormes in the Pacific during World War II.
Following his service he entered the paint store business, eventually owning his own store in Daly City, California. During this time he served as the first bishop of Pacifica Ward. At age 42 he enrolled at BYU as a freshman, majoring in psychology. He eventually earned the Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral degrees. He served once again as Bishop while completing his education. Subsequently he was employed at the State Hospital in Provo, Utah culminating his career there as Superintendent. After retirement he conducted a practice of marriage and family counseling, while at the same time serving as an Ordinance Worker and Sealer at the Provo Temple.
Seymour is survived by his wife, Jane Coggins Steed of Provo, Utah; son, S. Paul Steed of Orangevale, California; daughter, Mary Jane Dame of Elk Grove, California; son, David Miller Steed of Mapleton, Utah; sister, Mattie Steed Griffin of Logan, Utah; 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. His greatest joy was found in his 66 years of marriage to Jane, of which he frequently spoke.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 17, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the LDS Lakeside Third Ward Chapel, 110 N. 2400 W., Provo, Utah. Family and friends may call from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the chapel. After the funeral service, a graveside service will take place at the Farmington City Cemetery, 130 North Main, Farmington, Utah. Condolences may be sent to info@bergmortuary.com.
