A former West High School counselor was arrested and charged in 3rd District Court Thursday with raping a teenage girl under his guidance.

Marco Rutlelco Herrera, 52, was charged with three counts of rape, two counts of forcible sodomy, all first-degree felonies, and five counts of forcible sexual abuse, all second-degree felonies.

Herrera is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old West High student multiple times between April 1 and June 30. Herrera was the girl's guidance counselor.

Herrera was arrested on a $250,000 warrant at his home Thursday afternoon.

When the investigation was brought to the attention of school officials, Herrera was immediately suspended and ultimately fired, according to Salt Lake City police detective Jeff Bedard.

Few details were released Thursday about the alleged incidents, including whether they happened on the school property at 241 N. 300 West.

Investigators are worried that there may possibly be other victims and are asking parents who believe their child may have been victimized to contact them. Anyone with information on Herrera can call Salt Lake City police at 799-3000.

West High School's Web site listed Herrera, who has been with the school many years, as a counselor responsible for seventh, eighth and ninth-grade issues as well as being the NCAA eligibility adviser during the 2006-07 school year.
