Police are looking for eight men after a man was brutally beaten Saturday in a disturbing scene straight out of a movie.

Around 1:30 a.m., a man parked outside the Coffee Break, 450 E. 400 South, was dragged out of his car and "curbed," said Salt Lake Police Lt. Dave Hoffman.

Two men placed the man's head on a curb and stomped on it, police said. The 20-year-old victim was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Curbing — sometimes called "curb stomping" or "curb checking" — was a term coined in a scene in the 1998 movie "American History X." In the film, a man is forced to lie down, open his mouth and pretend to bite the curb. A neo-Nazi skinhead then stomps on the man's head.

The end result is often a broken neck, jaw and teeth.

In October 2006, a 17-year-old boy suffered multiple skull fractures and broken teeth when he was curbed after leaving a party in Herriman.

An updated condition was not available for the victim of Saturday's assault.

Police are looking for eight white males in connection with that beating. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 799-3000.
