Vernon Lynn Tyler
1929 ~ 2008
July 1st, 2008 is a day Vernon Lynn Tyler, family, and friends will remember as a sweet and long awaited moment of his passing from this life's mission to the next. The cause of death was Parkinsonism, which he endured for many years. His greatest joy was his marriage to Arlean Kerby. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on May 7, 1952, after Lynn returned from his mission to Argentina.
Lynn and Arlean enjoyed a lifetime together spanning more than 50 years of faithful service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His favorite memories included Temple work and service with Arlean as labor missionaries in Tonga and Samoa. They spent time in Hawaii where Lynn completed his degree while also developing Church educational materials for the Pacific Church Schools. He and Arlean enjoyed the challenges of extensive world service in the South Pacific, India, and elsewhere.
During his 40 years at Brigham Young University he worked as a global educator, helping to create bridges of understanding between cultures as the Director of Intercultural Communications at the Kennedy Center. Two of his most notable contributions were the creation of the Culturgrams, and the development of the Outreach Program for which he is widely known.
Lynn is survived by his beautiful bride, Arlean, and children: Alyn, Kary, Val, Arlyn, Dan, Matthew Lee, and foster daughter Mary Ann
Harding. He was preceded in his passing by his beloved mother,
Kathryn Durham, father, Norman
Perry Tyler, stepfather, Lynn Durham, elder brother, Norman, and foster daughter, Annie Peshlakai. In Dad's own words,
