OGDEN — The Utah Department of Transportation began two road projects in Weber and Sardine canyons this week, and wide and oversized trucks will be prohibited from traveling through Weber Canyon on I-84.
On I-84 in Weber Canyon, UDOT is replacing bridges. It also will fix the pavement and drainage in the westbound lanes. Last summer, UDOT made improvements to eastbound lanes, UDOT spokesman Vic Saunders said.
While westbound lanes are under construction, traffic in the canyon will be shifted to the eastbound lanes but will be restricted to one 11-foot-wide lane in each direction, partitioned by a concrete divider, Saunders said. Wide and oversized trucks will be prohibited. For wide-load routing around Weber Canyon, trucking companies need to contact the Echo Port of Entry at 435-336-5286, the Perry Port of Entry at 435-734-9414 or the Port of Entry Administration Office at 801-965-4892.
The Weber Canyon project should be completed in October, Saunders said.
In Sardine Canyon, UDOT is installing a continuous concrete barrier from Mantua to Sardine Summit on U.S. 89, Saunders said. Construction is expected to be finished in August.
UDOT crews will first make drainage improvements in the roadway median through midsummer, then place the barrier on the roadway centerline, Saunders said.
With both projects, lane restrictions will be in effect, and motorists are encouraged to reduce their speeds and be alert to their surroundings. Motorists also are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone, Saunders said.
