After a fine start, Mike Weir missed the cut at the British Open golf tournament Friday at Turnberry after shooting a second-round, 8-over-par 78 for a 5-over-par 145 total.
It marked just the second time in 11 tries that Weir has missed the cut at The Open Championship. Weir played early in the day under windy and wet conditions. His playing partner, Ben Curtis, went from a 65 to an 80 and also missed the cut.
A triple-bogey 8 at the par-5 No. 7 hole hurt Weir along with bogeys at Nos. 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 11. After that, he played 1-under with a birdie at No. 15, but he missed the cut by one shot.
"We were hitting 3-woods into the wind from 210 yards," Weir told Associated Press.
At least Weir was in good company, as Tiger Woods also finished at 145 with a second-round 74.
